The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) kicked off with grandeur in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, drawing over 6,000 non-resident Indians (NRIs) from 75 countries. This three-day event, held from January 8 to 10, 2025, highlighted the vital contributions of the Indian diaspora in shaping India’s global presence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the convention, themed “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat”, emphasizing the integral role of overseas Indians in India’s journey toward development.

Odisha Hosts Diaspora Leaders

The Odisha government, under Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, partnered with the Ministry of External Affairs to organize the event. The celebrations began with the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, inaugurated by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Youth Affairs Minister Mansukh Mandviya, and CM Majhi. Attendees included business leaders, academicians, economists, and philosophers, reflecting the diverse and vibrant Indian diaspora.

Key Highlights

  1. Pravasi Bharatiya Express:
  1. Prime Minister Modi launched the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a special tourist train designed for the diaspora. This initiative under the Pravasi Teertha Darshan Yojana offers participants a chance to visit India’s spiritual and cultural landmarks.
  1. Signature Odia Hospitality:

Guests savored Odisha’s rich culinary heritage, including delicacies like Dalma (mixed pulse with vegetables), Chenapoda (baked cheese dessert), and Chaula Khiri (rice pudding). NRIs expressed their delight at the state’s unique flavors and warm hospitality.

  1. Global Engagement:

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the diaspora’s role in enhancing India’s global perception and contributing to its vision of becoming a developed nation (Viksit Bharat). He called the convention a “family reunion” and reassured attendees of the government’s unwavering support for Indians abroad.

Why January 9?

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa on January 9, 1915, marking the beginning of his pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle. Since 2003, this day celebrates the enduring bond between India and its diaspora.

Odisha: A Global Gateway

Hosting the PBD has spotlighted Odisha as a key player in India’s global engagement. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi highlighted the state’s growing infrastructure, cultural vibrancy, and investment opportunities.

A Vibrant Diaspora

With over 35.4 million Indians living abroad, the diaspora contributes significantly to India’s remittance inflows and international reputation. Countries like the USA and UAE host large numbers of Indians, who play critical roles in shaping India’s global identity.

Looking Ahead

As Pravasi Bharatiya Divas continues to foster connections between the Indian government and its global diaspora, Odisha’s successful hosting of the event reflects the state’s readiness to engage with the world. With initiatives like the Pravasi Bharatiya Express and emphasis on diaspora-driven development, India strengthens its global footprint and builds a future enriched by its diaspora’s contributions.

This year’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrates not just the achievements of the past but also the limitless possibilities of collaboration for a brighter, more connected future.
