The government said on Wednesday that the detentions were made to prevent any untoward incidents and breach of peace in the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370. The MHA has also said that a total of 5,161 people, including stone pelters and chief ministers, have been taken in preventive detention since August 4.
However, it further stated, “Since these detentions have been made under statutory provisions by the concerned magistrates based on their satisfaction in each case, it is not possible for the government to give any timelines for their release.”
The Home Ministry also said, “Government of Jammu and Kashmir has further reported that in order to prevent commission of offences involving breach of peace, activities prejudicial to the security of the state and maintenance of public order, 5,161 persons, including stone pelters, OGWs, separatists, etc were taken into preventive custody in Kashmir Valley since 4th August, 2019. Out of these, 609 persons are under preventive detentions.”
