Bhubaneswar,October 29:  Two days after the direction of the Orissa High Court, camp courts were conducted on the premises of jails across the state and 278 undertrial prisoners (UTPs) were granted bail on Monday.

On the first day of the camp court, highest 157 prisoners were granted bail in the camp court organised in Kendrapara jail followed by 56 in Choudwar jail. Similarly, 29 undertrials from Karanjia and nine from Barbil jails were granted bails.

Besides, seven prisoners in Rairangpur jail, eight in Jagatsinghpur and four each from Anandapur and Champua jails were also granted bails in the camp courts.

On Saturday, the Orissa High Court directed all the district and sessions judges to hold camp court on jails premises across the state to facilitate bail of undertrial prisoners.  The direction came in view of the extraordinary situation across the state due to the unending strike by lawyers.

The HC clarified that only bail pleas will be heard in the camp courts. Accused persons can appeal for bails through the jail authorities. The jail authorities have been directed to make the prisoners aware about the camp court initiatives.
